About Us

In March 1968 fourteen people got together and founded A-B-C Credit Union.

Those original members contributed 2 shillings and 6 pence, the equivalent of 12p today.

In April of that year, with a share balance of just £19.00, A-B-C Credit Union Ltd opened its books for membership.

It was also in April 1968 that our credit union became affiliated to the Irish League of Credit Unions.

Those early years were difficult ones.

The original members (known as founder members) struggled against a backdrop of social deprivation and unemployment to build a solid foundation that would last.

Today with now over 40 years of service to our members it is apparent that the foundation they created stood the test of time and a debt of gratitude is owed to those founder members for the benefits enjoyed today.

A Guide to Credit Unions

A Credit Union is a financial co-operative which is owned and controlled by its members.

Each Credit Union is owned by its members – the people who save and borrow from it. They are ‘not for profit’ organisations that exist solely to serve their members. They use a pool of member’s savings to finance loans at very reasonable interest rates.

All surplus funds are distributed to members in dividend/interest rebate. The dividend is declared at the AGM.

Irish League of Credit Unions

A-B-C is affiliated to the Irish League of Credit Unions (ILCU). All Credit Unions affiliated to the ILCU are members of the Savings Protection Scheme (SPS). The SPS is owned and operated by the ILCU and in exceptional circumstances can intervene to protect member’s savings. For more information on SPS or the ILCU please visit www.creditunion.ie

How we are Different?

A Credit Union differs from a bank in that it does not charge any fees e.g. loan set-up fees, late payment fees etc. Interest is charged on the decreasing loan balance each month. Loans can be repaid in full at any time without penalty.

We are proud that no member of any Credit Union affiliated to ILCU, has ever lost a penny of savings.
